Tickle Turdle Disambiguation

There aren't many crochet soakers out there.  Along with the theory that they cannot be made out of acrylic yarn (I've read differing accounts) there seems to be a concurrent theory that they must be knitted.  There are a handful of free patterns out there for crocheted soakers.  Probably the most famous one--at least, the one I've been seeing since I was pregnant with B, who is almost 8--is the Tickle Turdle pattern.

It seems to be available only via the Web Archive, but here it is: Tickle Turtle Wool Wrap Pattern.  It's a great pattern, and I love the finished product, but it's not necessarily the clearest pattern out there.  So this is a disambiguation of that pattern.  While Angelia Mercer provides a very adaptable recipe, with measurements and suggested yarns, I thought it might be a good idea to provide something closer to a traditional pattern.

Please note that this isn't a 100% normal pattern.  I'm not going to give you numbered rows, but I will give you numbers of stitches and a gauge and let you know how many rows to make.  Please note that this version assumes you're smart enough to know how to do basic things like make turning chains and turn at the end of rows.

Sorry for the poor photo; I'll replace it once I make a soaker with paler yarn!

Tickle Turdle Soaker, Simplified

Note that Angelia Mercer holds sole copyright to this pattern.  I'm just providing a hopefully-easier-to-follow version.

Materials:
5.5 mm hook
4.5 mm hook
< 3.5 oz worsted weight yarn (I used Bernat Berella 4 yarn.  I do not recommend Simply Soft for this; it's a light worsted.)

Size: Small

Gauge: With 5.5mm hook, 3 sts and 4 rows of sc equal one inch.

Directions for the Soaker:

With 5.5 mm hook, chain 32.

One row of 30 double crochet.

Two rows of front post/back post double crochet. (30 sts)

Nine rows of single crochet. (30 sts)

Single crochet decline over three stitches at the beginning and end of four rows.  (Insert hook into stitch, pull up loop 3 times; yarn over & pull through all loops on hook.)  (14 sc at end)

38 rows of single crochet. (14 sts)

One row of double crochet. (14 sts)

Two rows of front post/back post DC.

Directions for Soaker Edging:

Still with  5.5 mm hook, place two single crochets in the side of each double crochet row and one single crochet in side of each single crochet row (including the sides of the stitches you declined over).  Make certain you end up with 64 stitches, or the rest of the directions won't make sense.

Switch to 4.5 mm hook.

Single crochet in first 15 stitches.  Double crochet in remaining stitches.

Single crochet in first 15 stitches.  Front post/back post double crochet in next 15 stitches.  Front post double crochet two stitches together nine times.  Front post double crochet in next stitch.  Single crochet to end.

Single crochet in first 15 stitches.  Back post double crochet two stitches together five times.  Front post/back post double crochet in next 15 stitches.  Single crochet to end.

Single crochet in first 15 stitches.  Front post double crochet two stitches together eight times.  Single crochet to end.  Finish off.

Repeat the edging on the other side of the wrap.  Important: Assuming you join the yarn at the long narrow end again, you will have to swap out your front post double crochets for back post double crochets and vice versa.
